Bill and Melinda Gates have big plans for the sweet potato. When it comes to that orange veggie, North Carolina has a green thumb. The state is the country’s largest producer of sweet potatoes. The Gates Foundation recently gave N.C. State University $ 12.4 million to help breed a better sweet potato for Sub-Saharan Africa.

Pig farmers are protecting their herds from a devastating viral epidemic sweeping the state.
The PED virus is found only in pigs, and poses no danger to humans. When it first appeared in North Carolina last year, thousands of pigs died. While large-scale pork operations stand to lose tens of thousands of dollars, small farmers are not as worried.
